The Superior Court of Justice (STJ) has ruled that the mayor of Fazenda Rio Grande, Marco Marcondes (PSD), and the other individuals investigated in Operation Fake Care , including sports commentator Fernando Gomes , may have their electronic ankle monitors removed and be freed from nighttime confinement , measures that had been previously imposed by the courts. The operation investigates an alleged scheme to embezzle funds from the municipality’s health department, which is said to have caused losses of around R$ 10 million. According to Gaeco, linked to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, images obtained show the mayor and three other suspects acting suspiciously in Marcondes’ condominium , holding bags that, according to the complaint, were packages intended for the distribution of bribes.
The mayor and the others involved were arrested, but were later released to house arrest with electronic monitoring. With the STJ’s decision, this measure was suspended.
Despite the lifting of the precautionary measures, the mayor and the finance secretary remain prohibited from resuming public office, in order to prevent interference in the investigations.
The operation is investigating whether Marcondes allegedly oversaw contracts with a company responsible for the embezzlement, and the investigations are ongoing to clarify the involvement of all those implicated.
