Políticos e autoridades celebram queda da Lei Magnitsky contra Moraes

The United States government announced this Friday (12) the removal of the names of Minister Alexandre de Moraes and his wife , lawyer Viviane Barci de Moraes, from the sanctions of the Magnitsky Act, which generated celebration and praise from some Brazilian politicians and authorities.

The Minister-Chief of the Secretariat of Institutional Relations, Gleisi Hoffman, posted on her social media that the lifting of the sanction is a victory for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and a defeat for Jair Bolsonaro’s family.

“The lifting of US sanctions against Minister Alexandre de Moraes is a great victory for Brazil and President Lula. It was Lula who brought this revocation to Donald Trump’s table, in a dignified and sovereign dialogue. It is a great defeat for Jair Bolsonaro’s family, traitors who conspired against Brazil and against Justice.”

The leader of the Workers’ Party (PT) in the Chamber of Deputies, Lindbergh Farias (PT-RJ), posted a video on his social media celebrating the decision.

“The Trump administration has just removed Alexandre de Moraes from the Magnitsky Act. A victory for democracy, sovereignty, and the diplomacy of President Lula’s government. Great day,” he said.

Federal deputy Fernanda Melchionna (PSOL-RS) wrote that it was high time to correct this imperialist imposition on a Brazilian minister. “Eduardo Bolsonaro and Paulo Figueiredo must be crying in the fetal position right now,” she commented.

Federal deputy Erika Hilton (PSOL) recalled that the law was eagerly awaited by the Bolsonaro family. “It was one of the only hopes that Eduardo would one day embrace his father again,” she posted.

The Magnitsky Act sanctions were imposed on Alexandre de Moraes by the Donald Trump administration at the end of July. In September, the list was expanded to include Viviane’s name as well.

Congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SO), who negotiated sanctions against Brazil with the US government, also commented – along with journalist Paulo Figueiredo – on the end of the application of the Magnitsky Act against Moraes. In the text, published in Portuguese and English, they lamented the US decision.

“We received with regret the news of the most recent decision announced by the American government. We are grateful for the support that President Trump has shown throughout this journey and for the attention he has dedicated to the serious crisis of freedoms that plagues Brazil.”
