The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), reported that the expulsion of journalists from the House plenary, last Tuesday (9), was due to security concerns following the occupation of the Board of Directors by Deputy Glauber Braga (PSOL-RJ).
“In accordance with the Board Act No. 145/2020, the Legislative Police requested the removal of advisors, employees and press professionals from the plenary to ensure the safety of those present,” Motta justifies in a note published this Thursday (11).

After the journalists left, Glauber Braga was forcibly removed from the Chamber’s presiding table by legislative police . The congressman was protesting against the vote to revoke his mandate. During the action, journalists were assaulted by the Legislative Police .
The TV Câmara broadcast of the plenary session was interrupted. The House Presidency stated that this was a normal occurrence since the session was suspended.
“According to Service Order No. 5/2022, which establishes the order of priority for official broadcasts, the interruption of a plenary session automatically entails the broadcast of the subsequent legislative event. Thus, TV Câmara began broadcasting the meeting of the Health Committee, a standard technical procedure,” says the Chamber’s statement.
Attack on the press
The National Federation of Journalists (Fenaj) said that the expulsion of journalists from the plenary was “extremely serious” and considered the measure “a curtailment of the work of the press and of the freedom and right to information of the Brazilian population.”
The president of Fenaj, Samira Castro, told Agência Brasil that the issue of security does not justify the action.
“Especially because they weren’t just removed, they were removed violently, they were assaulted, and that’s very serious. The statement doesn’t convince us because it was possible to have at least a minimal dialogue with those workers who were there doing their job,” he said.
Meeting cancelled.
Motta even scheduled a meeting with representatives appointed by the Chamber’s Press Committee for this Wednesday (10), but cancelled the agenda afterwards, claiming lack of time .
Before yesterday’s session, the plenary was once again closed to the press without any explanation being given to the professionals who usually circulate freely through the main voting room of the Chamber.
In a statement released today, two days after the expulsion incident, Motta regretted the disruption caused to media professionals and reaffirmed that there was no intention to limit the exercise of journalistic activity .
“The information presented by the journalists will be incorporated into the ongoing investigation in order to identify any excesses in the measures adopted throughout the process of resuming work,” he added.

Act against censorship
On Wednesday, a group of journalists held a protest at the Chamber of Deputies against censorship and the violent actions of the legislative police the previous day .
Images and accounts show the brutal actions of legislative police against reporters, cameramen, and photographers who were trying to do their job . Some professionals required medical attention due to assaults that included pulling, elbowing, and shoving.
The Brazilian Press Association announced that it will file lawsuits against the Speaker of the House for “violence committed by the Legislative Police.”
